Peter: Well, I always default to the Cluckery. I'm so proud of him and the team and the roster. And I think the only thing anybody can control is their own effort and kind of their own dreams and where they want to go. When Khris was a rookie, I said, "Do you know whose jersey you wearing?" I also listen, I thought, and my parents thought both my brother and I were as you can imagine before ADD was actually diagnosed, Peter: for kids our age and stuff, because its still be on impulsive, relentless, like, [inaudible]. This is why you go to Parents' Night, folks. So, that part of it was awesome. If you have a partner in life, they'd better be a teammate. Youve got Jamie Dimon, who is this incredible long-term equity holder who is done it and then youve got Mike Fascitelli whos really was the chairman and CEO of Vornado Real Estate in New York on the commercial real estate side. Peter: Im fairly, my mom was immersed in data analytics before data and analytics was business intelligence. We were sitting brainstorming like, how do we keep people employed? From 2006-2014, the Bucks only made the postseason twice in eight seasons. I think that was a necessity. It was just such a big deal. I answer that by saying like we were successful because at the time the Brooklyn Nets, the Orlando Magic, and a bunch of other teams were selfless with their help with us on how to have best practices on how to build an arena and how to build an infrastructure on how to form. It was like kind of so much fun and learning so much and kind of being on teams with really diverse people all around the league and around different teams. And so, talk about that and your leadership style, generosity and how important it is to give back. So, how do you navigate the ship through waters you've never been through before? And you know what their experience is? We need to resource this place, like you cant imagine and we need to build an infrastructure that is beyond sound for growth, so not just day one. Those are all things that are kind of seemed simple, but not done all the time. Talk about that nuance because like you were saying, from the outside in, you could say all the players have it made. Peter: Yeah, I think I have this, my own personal craziness is I love to collect people. More recently, Tom Kearns, a mental health counselor and one of The Runs longtime staples, has been bringing his 12-year-old daughter, Sophia, so she can shoot hoops on the side with Dan Feigins 12-year-old daughter, Dylan. The world is incredible. Talk a little bit about where you even grew up, how you even got here. I don't know, being able to be a business person and kind of get away from your day job and go into a data room of a pro team seemed just the greatest thing I'd ever experienced. Is this coming? Michael Red: Talk about the process of redeveloping downtown and one who's so in love with Milwaukee and it's like a second home to me, living there for so many years. "We didn't have much time," he says. Ive got two kids Im working as, Id say a consultant, helping to put together a business plan. I wander around the house, Feigin said in a recent telephone interview. Ive been really lucky. How do we rethink it? Peter: Then I think youre, listen, viewer consumption, what youre talking about is whether you put on an Oculus or whether youve got five screens going up, people are now watching short form video in five to 20 second increments to absorb a game. Michael Red: I got my sources. The whole world is on that balance, so part of what we haven't really talked about much is our culture here. Incredibly these three guys were literally engaged. Thats just what a joy. But, boy, you talk about how you go to sleep like the night, a night in March, in the middle of March last year thinking like, "Oh, my God. Over the years, The Run has become an indispensable part of the players weekend routines and a socioeconomic hodgepodge. Peters son, Thomas, and Dans son, Jackson, are both high school juniors and excellent players. We don't have a business, not sure when we will have a business. We're not an organization that splits up into silos of business or basketball. And then kind of understanding that he knew I was kind of keen on the operation side and understood a team and an organization's P&L for a good way. Feigin, who had held executive positions at Madison Square Garden, Marquis Jet Partners and NetJets, packed up his New York home and went to Milwaukee in 2014. I mean, I probably publicly spoke for the first time in my life 100 times in the first 200 days to everybody from Lions Clubs to the barber shop, to the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts to kind of preach how big a deal it is for city this size to have and keep an NBA team. Just my own exposure was mixed in what are best practices for centralized services. You are in a community thats not only sports crazy, but very community minded, the Packers, the Badgers, the Bucks are all very community involved. I think if you took me at this point in my life and where I am and. Michael Red: The facilities, everything that you guys have done so far is remarkable. So, it's really about cost containment and preservation of jobs. We're going to develop some residential and we'll hopefully have a great commercial tenant and we continue to build. So, if you're against equality, then we probably never will understand or get along or agree with each other." Thats for every aspect of it. And maybe 15 years ago, when I was working in Madison Square Garden, my brother was in a parent conference with Mark Lasry and Mark might have mentioned that he wants to look at some teams. I suggested a lot of people who would be great presidents, and lo and behold, none of them worked out to do it, so I think they had to default to me to run the company.". Peter Feigin readily admits that, as president of the Milwaukee Bucks, he lives in the fantasy world of professional sports. So, it's a little bit kind of nuts and delusional to go through thinking like you can kind of accomplish or solve or get anything done, but it's kind of the way I've kind of attacked life in a big way. That was the real mad man era that your mom was in at Grey Advertising, right? Weve got Peter Feigin. He perpetuates a culture that attracts like-minded people to him. Michael Red: And so, through all of the minutiae and all of 2020 and now going into the new season, which we're in now, managing to still focus the organization on winning the championship. Talk about the importance of having diversity in the front office particularly. I don't care where you take them from, then we're on a good path." One Thursday night he gave me a call and said, Do you think you can go to Milwaukee and talk to Senator Herb Call. Like the Kees, you're going to hopefully be doing something you love with people you love and working your butt off, but there are expectations. And you do it, for us, kind of my job was to be that rock and support and think about if you told me that 50% of my time would be spent on making sure everybody is okay. But talk about that nuance and being in leaders on the social injustice play. And I think it was like a checkpoint for us certainly, but for the whole country on like, "Boy, this is one of those inflection points that we've got to make matter in a big way." Shout out to Sarah, who is I think one of the best assistants out there. They better know you, they better get you. Very little sympathy or empathy for pro athletes because of what they get paid. Youre going to actually have to be a decent person and not be toxic. Its like winning the life lottery.. Right now, its very hard to figure out and understand where its going, because this is the wild West. "We have a. Michael Red: It's becoming that and has become that. Peter: Yeah, it was incredible. Feigin, 50, calls his game the Saturday Morning Run popularly known among its members as The Run or S.M.R. and he has a massive collection of T-shirts to prove it. There's no right equation. But youve not only lived the dream but also climb to the mountain and very few win a championship. Our owners, when you talk about, our active operating board of governors, youve got guys like Mark Lazari who kind of in avenue capital and ran the distressed debt world. My son was a freshman at San Joaquin Memorial High School when Brook Lopez was there and he played with Brook under coach Pat Giles. And we thought we were in a place and we're nowhere close to how good we can be or how we can use this NBA platform and our players and our organization to help change the community, to help change our performance as a team, and to be better citizens. So, it really is kind of like all of us working together to figure out what the balance is. It keeps on changing, but we've got to be able to pivot and understand when we're out of balance. Feigin says Bucks Gaming will consist of roughly 10 full-time employees, including the team's five players, who will be housed by the franchise. And more importantly, kind of like building such a strong infrastructure with other people. It would be fun to own a hundred McDonalds franchises and you guys would be great at that. We've gotten through conversations. His friends, while the games are suspended, are trying to stay as prepared as possible. I need socks and I know we're not making them. It is a really tough existence. Peter Feigin: Yeah. I'm so honored, man, to have you on the podcast. There's no way that the reverence, the likeability and kind of the coolness of the Milwaukee can't be a team and a city that the whole world cheers for in such a big way. Unfortunately, I probably haven't changed mentally or emotionally since we met, but she's my teammate. Well, you know about the ice cream truck. So, we continue to want to make this a place where players are like, "Shit, I've never been treated like this.". But Feigin also gives credit to video games. You sound super excited about the future. People who do argue are kind of not allowed back.. They're like, "Peter, don't double think anything. Michael Red: That's great advice. Its incredible and not many people get to do it, lets be honest, when you get to actually live your dream and go to the top. I think, listen, you could certainly have success with superpower and great skill and everything, but to have peopleYou mentioned at the beginning of the show, how in a small market, do you keep consistency? The way it works is they closed in April. Peter: Wow. The first kind of fully owned African American sports agency, whose main client was Arthur Ashe. Feigin would not be able to make his global pitch without his star. And I think my job is kind of the overall business and operations to go is a rapport with them that again, in the best case I always think an NBA player, this is a human business. A lot of fun. Even though all of us who were so engaged into, nothing compared to what that value was, what that emotion was too. So, I think for myself to Coach Bud, to Jon, we all kind of are on the same page of preaching like, "This is a performance culture." Peter: Weve been married like a hundred years. Peter: That was the Milwaukee Bucks. You really need to build equity and build trust especially in the Midwest youve. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think it's part of the culture and kind of down from ownership, like you're going to stand for something or you're going to stand for nothing. And lo and behold, kind of five, six years later, we've kind of accelerated it. Ill tell you how it I got the offer, the conversation and we play a pickup game of basketball every Saturday for 20 years with the same guys. I think one of the big skills is, I definitely do not know the answer to everything and if youre able to Basically I do think I can solve anything. My wife is like, What are you doing? I dont know what Im doing!. And I think the only thing anybody can control is their own effort and kind of their own dreams and where they want to go. Peter Feigin. And everyone was thrilled when Keefe showed up. But the Bucks' toughest hit came off the court. Whether youre building an arena, whether youre building infrastructure or a team, whether youre dealing with the same problems, it is really powerful to end up with, when you come up with conflict and problems or you need solutions, or you need smart brains to be able to pick up the phone with 5, 10 like-minded people who are dealing with the same stuff. Thats just my view, Lasry said. Peter: But one of the incredible things, alignment we have with myself, John Horst, whos our GM and coach Bud is like, weve got this undercurrent of constant improvement and kind of like never, pleased but never satisfied. But I think, those are the things that like, yes, you can always pay people. I actually read a whole story, theres a whole article, Peter, about your ring. In a 10 year phase, I started with a startup with Marquis Jet, with Kenny Dichter and Jesse Itzler who started the business and came from sports. It is so important that kind of at least in our infrastructure. People can find it at, I saw the website, it was Cluckery, cluckery.com, right? And it was kind of an incredible moment. Peter: Yeah, I think number one is to explain kind of a small market. What did your dad do for a living? That automatically and having him sign for the next five years, that gives you this springboard that we think. What a wonderful experience. It just kind of really trying. Michael Red: I know the whole organization showed a ton of grit from ownership to yourself, to management and players, even losing the Democratic National Convention last year. It would be great if you represented me and kind of went down there and looked at the business for a second." Id like to do that ring ceremony for hourly staff every day and the world would be a good place. So, we stopped having basketball games and we stopped having concerts and we stopped. Within 45 minutes, we had this unbelievable excitement of, were nuts, why dont we do like take home its big ordering out. And also, obviously some additions with Jrue Holiday and other great players we have this year. Lasry, who has been active in Democratic Party politics, has invited various campaign staffers. I played soccer and basketball, not overly blessed with athleticism. How exhausting was the bubble? With a B? Woodhouse recalled asking him. It's kind of like the joy of, like I said, I was a rough athlete compared to the Olympian and All-Star I'm talking to. I think probably one of the last public-private partnerships that thatll happen, when Troy brought together the city, the county and the state to put together a partnership for a new arena in downtown Milwaukee. I know you love gear more than anybody. Peter: heres the market. Peter Feigin, the president of the Milwaukee Bucks, playing defense. And I know how much you love your brother and your family, your wife, your kids. Why wouldn't you embrace Michael Red to really be a reflection of our franchise in such a great way because it's kind of what the great teams and brands do around the world is we've got this unbelievable legacy, which, you're a part of. And the Milwaukee Bucks players were the catalyst for that to happen in a big way. Michael Red: Peter Feigin. Im not a big fan of, hey, we need to make money or consult off that. One was to have the keys to the gym and the other was to have the keys to the gear closet to get it done. John: No question. Peter Feigin didn't go looking for his job as president of the Milwaukee Bucks. always network, and in my chance, it really happened with my identical twin brother who was running a private school in New York, which all of Marc Lasry's and Wes Edens's kids went to. What has it meant to you to bet on yourself? But for the first time since 1992, the game has been shelved indefinitely because of the coronavirus pandemic. He simplified the housing market for me. We have resources, we back them up, whatever you need, it's part of it. Antetokounmpo, now in his fifth NBA season, has become a basketball and cultural phenomenon. I wanted to be in marketing in sales. John: It looks amazing. We've got one of the global sports stars in the world. Literally the world, like across European soccer, across everything, for people to at least stop and think. Now, youre talking to your wife and your children and youre moving from New York City to Wisconsin. This is a human business. Where is your ring? We were in this really awesome mode of, oh, this is a startup, like this is a startup. So, this had been a surreal year and tough as a leader because it's exhausting. He is a legitimate superstar who also manages to bring in the European market. If my guys in high school or college gave me the finger as the point back on the assists from a backdoor or something, I think I got more of a thrill out of that than I got out of scoring points. "That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God.. Then Chris Middleton next to him, which is almost the same, who are these high quality character folks who happen to be all stars in skill level. But was like loved and I think Im addicted. We had to certainly do it on the resources, our facilities, we had to do it on the human capital, and then we had to change our whole perception which came from the owners on what we wanted to do on the court, which win an NBA championship and what we wanted to do off the court is be the innovators and be the leaders in the way we really operate. "Can you imagine? power forward, Alex Woodhouse, 34, a photographer and musician. God, I love it as a case study. You build this infrastructure and skill set that is geared toward a championship. And I knew who Arthur Ashe was, but I wasn't a big tennis guy and my job was basically being Arthur Ashe's right hand person through. The one thing that's been impressive for me, being a part of the family, is seeing how you all embrace the city. (There are perks to being commissioner.) For Feigin, Lasry, Edens, Dinan, head coach Jason Kidd and the entire organization, Antetokounmpo, born and raised in Greece to Nigerian immigrants, is a business unicorn. And how do we capture that, both digitally and on broadcast? Everybody knows you are going to work your butt off if you work here. I think we had like, "Oh, we had decent amount of African Americans. And you've done this a number of times throughout your career and your life. John: Thats so true. Please remember if youre going through Wisconsin, go and have some chicken tenders at the Cluckery. Now youre on the journey. And they were kind of stuck at the last minute deep in the summer. It's got so many other opportunities I never would have thought of ever." Peter: You are a genius because you use food as youre incentive and nothing better than ice cream. That's not a "here we got to the finish line." So, that was my one get back to kind of surprise him because I think there were a few spies that were taking pictures of every time I parked in that spot for a second. Number one, obviously, because like you said, its rare air, but youre learning on the job. But online gambling, in state by state is massive and how you can center that do you want to become part of a casino? You serve as like a mentor to them as well. It's hard to build trust here and it's provincial. And I've got to get Mark and Wes on the cast along with Jon. If Im 25 and struggling to get up and down the court because I was out with my friends, and these guys who are running companies are showing up and playing ball, then I have no excuse. Whos got next? Lee said. How do you create a hermetically sealed bubble for people to compete in on a campus and all the thousands of touch points, people, logistics and everything? My favorite part of coming to Milwaukee is going into your stash of gear and getting the hoodies and the gear. Talk about the journey to the Bucks and how did that happen and then why Milwaukee? He notes that with the Bucks also opening a G League team calledthe Wisconsin Herdthis past fall, there was internal debate about making the investment, but Edens was a notable force moving the decision forward. I dont know if thats a word, but I would attach myself. Before we started this interview, you took a little break and said, John excuse me for a second because someone very special stopped by. Talk a little bit about the ice cream truck, the ice cream man. And we'll get into the twin in a little bit. That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God. Like its going to streaming, its going to over the top, that is a huge change from all these local teams depending and getting guaranteed large dollar values for regional sports deals. The arena was, if the arena didnt happen, nothing happens, and that was a public-private. . We got here and kind of the first job was to look for a site and the second job was to really get public backing to build an arena, to demolish the Bradley Center and build a new arena, which were monumental big things to happen. We deal, and weve had some meetings with our friends at the Badgers of the University of Wisconsin as they create a collective, weve certainly been tracking kind of whats going on. Peter: Well, its having like Ive always said, people talk about their personal board of directors and what that is and I had the advantage and still have the advantage of my mother being the best consultant you could possibly have. Off the court it is best practice. Well, I think again, it kind of goes back to we thought we were this awakened organization because our percentages looked good. Peter Feigin, youre making an amazing impact. How do you get people who care? It's like it really is part of your life. How could we not be good at quick serve restaurants? Got it. And then I think on a parallel track, youre really building an infrastructure. Sometimes it goes up for judicial review to make sure the run is harmonious, Lee said. And I don't know how many people know this, towards the end of his life, he really kind of did exhibitions, talks, and meetings literally until the day he almost died and traveled the country and the world as really kind of an incredible role model with an incredible story. And we sat down as organization with the players, with the owners, with the executives and just said like, "Oh, we're going to double down." Now, Ive been extremely lucky. That everybody understands their benefits for their health insurance, that we're getting psychological health, that we're feeding people in the community, that we are on top of not just marching for social justice, but that we're dealing with, police reform, that we're resourcing our players. Then you talk about what your leadership is and what your purse is so it all starts and ends with Giannis. Alex Woodhouse "I thought I'd hit the jackpot," Feigin said. Well, that's you. I think to be successful here and take it from a very fast talking, sometimes lazy speaking New Yorker, who swears too much and does everything. This was the Milwaukee Bucks at the time had lost the most games in the NBA, had the least revenue, had the least season ticket holders, any metric you could measure. Not everyone is. Peter: Yeah, it is a combination of both because you really, I had a real rare opportunity to get out of sports and work outside of the sports industry for wealth. And that's what we try to do. Msgr.
